The New Detroit Trailer Features Way More John Boyega
Director Kathryn Bigelow impressed moviegoers in recent years with The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, both of which walked away with numerous accolades and award recognition. In a couple months, Bigelow will be back with another cinematic offering: Detroit, the period drama centered around what happened at the Algiers Motel during the 12th Street Riot and the aftermath of that incident. Leading the cast is Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega, and while the trailer released two months ago highlighted his importance in the movie, the latest preview places even more focus on his character, Melvin Dismukes. Unfortunately for Mr. Dismukes, it’s not in the best light.
Rather than delve straight into the racially-charged uprising that took place in 1967, the new Detroit trailer opens with John Boyega’s Melvin Dismukes in a police interrogation room. He calmly explains to the officers how he heard gunfire near the Algiers Hotel, where he was working security. The police soon arrived afterwards, and the situation devolved from there. By the time Dismukes made it to the scene, three kids were dead. Simple enough, right? Well, despite Dismukes’ explanation of the events, the officers confirm that he carries a .38 revolver and ask if he’s ever shot anyone with it, clearly fishing to see if he’s the one who killed those kids.
From there, we jump into the the main action of Detroit, i.e. the 12th Street Riot itself, the police raid that night, the uprisings that erupted afterwards and snippets of the trial held later. All the while, we jump back and forth to what Dismukes’ witnessed at the hotel during the riots and him being interrogated by the police. By the end of the trailer, you can feel the fear as he shakes when one of the officers asks him once again explain what happened at the hotel, as if they won’t let him go until he surrenders to their preconceived narrative.
John Boyega rose to stardom in 2015 with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and along with reprising Finn in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and presumably Episode IX, he’s keeping his blockbuster run going with next year’s Pacific Rim: Uprising. But with Detroit, Boyega is jumping back into pure drama, and this movie will show off a different side of his acting chops that many viewers haven’t seen yet. Along with Boyega, Detroit‘s cast includes Will Poulter, Jacob Latimore, Jason Mitchell, Anthony Mackie, Hannah Murray, Jack Reynor and John Krasinski.
Detroit will be released on August 4. Don’t forget to also check out out 2017 movie guide to see what else you have to look forward to in theaters for the latter half of the year.
