Early reception War for the Planet of the Apes is very positive, and some critics have singled out a few reasons for why this is. They’ve celebrated how the film looks, calling out the amazing technology and director Matt Reeves’ beautiful shots. Others go on to praise the performances from actors like Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, and Steve Zahn.

Finally, one thing that seems to be clear about War for the Planet of the Apes is that it isn’t a typical summer blockbuster. Critics have praised it for its gloomy atmosphere, and focus on character and emotion over all else. One critic even went far enough to call it “almost a silent film”.

If for whatever reason you were worried about Matt Reeves directing The Batman, you can probably table those feelings; The Dark Knight appears to be in extremely capable hands. You won’t have to wait very long to experience all this for yourself because War For the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 14, 2017.
