broad : IN A shocking incident, two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths, armed with a gun, opened fire at two police constables who tried to nab them, in Patil bungalow area, off Apte Road, in Shivajinagar, around 4.45 pm on Tuesday.

It was a narrow escape for the two police constables as the bullet did not hit them. Police said that the bullet only brushed the shoes of police constable Mayur Rajendra Bhokare, who along with constable Sandesh Khadke, chased the men from Balgandharva auditorium to Patil Bungalow area.

Police said that Bhokare and Khadke are currently attached to the police headquarters. They spotted two men possessing guns on the road, near Savarkar Bhavan, close to the Balgandharva auditorium. They tried to stop the armed men but the duo fled from the spot on their two-wheelers. The constables started chasing them on their motorcycle.

Police said that Bhokare and Khadke nabbed the duo at a residential area near Patil bungalow, when they tried to flee. Despite the cops being unarmed, they chased the two men carrying a gun. During the scuffle at the spot, one of them opened fire at the cops and then fled from there.

Police said that nobody was injured in the incident. The bullet brushed Bhokare’s shoes and hit the ground. Meanwhile, on receiving the information, teams of Deccan police station and crime branch rushed to the spot. Senior police officers, including deputy commissioner of police (zone I) Tushar Doshi, deputy commissioner of police (crime) PR Patil, visited the crime scene for investigation. Police recovered a bullet and an empty cartridge from the spot.

“We have got some clues about the assailants. An offence under Section 307 (attempt to murder) and Arms act is being registered at the Deccan Gymkhana police station in this case. Investigation has been initiated,” said Doshi.

Meanwhile, Bhokare and Khadke gave description of the assailants to the police team. They also told the number of the motorcycle used by the assailants. It was revealed that the owner of this vehicle is from Karve Nagar area. The police had rounded up a few suspects for questioning till late evening.
