Not everyone needs to build a website from scratch, which involves a lot of money and time and often requires you to keep a web developer on hand whenever you want to make changes.
Luckily there is a growing number of website builders out there that provide a platform to create a beautiful site with little or no technical or design experience. They all differ in how they work, the features they provide, the advantages and disadvantages, and the level of design and programming experience that is required from the user.
So, how do you choose the right one for your first website? Here are a few tips to get you started:
What can you do?
Knowing your limitations and skills can help you narrow down the list of website builders that are right for you. In general, you should fit into one of these four groups:
You’re a designer, or someone with experience in design. You know how to use Photoshop, Illustrator, and other design programs, and you know exactly how you want your website to look. You don’t, however, know a thing about code, beyond basic HTML and CSS.
You are a web developer or someone who knows how to build websites from scratch but you don’t have any idea what you want your website to look like and you have zero design skills to make it happen.
• Designer + Developer
The big combo – you’re someone with knowledge and experience in both design and web development. You can basically do this all from scratch on your own, but you prefer a website builder to save a lot of time and money on the whole process.
• None of the above
You don’t have a technical or design background, you have no idea where to start creating a website or how to design it. You do, however, know how important it is to have one and you want one for your business that looks professional without spending a huge sum on developers and designers.
Whichever group you belong to, there is a website builder (or two) out there for you.
Learning about Website Builders
As previously mentioned, all website builders differ in their advantages and disadvantages, and now that you know which group you belong to, you can find the ones that are most suited to your needs.
For example, if you are a designer, you may want to consider Wix. They have a lot of templates, but what makes it a favorite among designers is that you can edit and move everything without having to know a single bit of code.
For developers, WordPress is usually the preferred platform because of its support, community, add-ons, tools, and more.
If you’re neither, Weebly could be the right website builder for you. It is very simple to use, and you don’t need any experience in design or programming. You simply choose one of the templates available and customize it using their simple toolset. The editing features are very limited to prevent users from accidently breaking any important functionalities (like responsiveness), but if you’re looking for something simple that works, this is a great option.
