 The Importance of Occupational Wellness

Occupational wellness is the ability to achieve a balance between work and leisure in a way that promotes health, a sense of personal satisfaction and is (for most people) financially rewarding. A person who is doing exactly what they want to do in life and is comfortable and content with their work and leisure plans is in a healthy state of occupational wellness. Our attitude and ability to effectively deal with work, school, and career goals greatly affect wellness, performance, interactions with others and overall success.

If you were to ask most people to define ‘’wellness’’, the answer you may get will reflect what one individual sees in another. The signs of being well are living a life injury free or of any medical condition, upon the ability to exercise and feel rich from a balanced diet.

Anybody who isn’t perceived to be well once lived a level of good optimal health. Along the way, where did this decline? Was there a particular factor or many that contributed to this unwanted cause? How can we identify these symptoms we cannot see?  For many, mental illness can be caused by subconscious factors that they don’t entirely notice.

Throughout Canada and the United States, the governing education bodies promote that there are seven dimensions to overall wellness. Each dimension has a significant part to play in how we perceive better physical and mental health on a daily basis. This model was setup so we could capture any factors in our lives that may be silently deteriorating our health.

The model changed in recent years from having five dimensions, due to the finding of significant factors that affect over 86% of workers in North America.

Why I feel Occupational Health is a Significant Dimension in Overall Wellness

There are many scenarios that eliminate the balance of good health, even if you were to think they were healthy. Some of us are too conscious about how we can keep a state of equilibrium. As personal trainers, we want you to keep a balance of what we perceive as healthy, again something that’s balanced.

Isolating yourself from society by being obsessive about exercise and nutrition wouldn’t exactly be well from a psychological perspective. Therefore, this affect your social health.

Having a nice job but not living in an area that has good transportation, void of air pollution and has drug related problems, could lead to a decline in your environmental health.

Not having people who can talk to you about solving problems or any matters in your life could affect yourintellectual health.

Occupational health is a leading factor of good health as we spend 8-12 hours daily at the workplace. Toronto is a demanding city for young professionals. It is easy to say when we are frustrated that we don’t like working. Everyone has their days where they feel overwhelmed, but there must be a certain level of satisfaction to your occupation.

If one dimension gets affected, the rest do too, making occupational health significant for the hours consumed on where you focus your energy.

In most cases, people who don’t have a certain level of occupational health, don’t take initiative of their physical or social health, therefore are not living a healthy lifestyle. Questions to Be Asked About Your Occupational Health

Importance Of Corporate Health Programs

Most feelings at the workplace are sparked by stress, nothing personal. Everybody wants to succeed and making that work together can always be made better. Employees of a firm need to be able to express good emotion to each other during their working day as well as dealing with work related matters. This is why corporate wellness is a good solution.

Exercise releases good endorphins and amongst colleagues it brings about a better sense of group spirituality.  It makes people in a firm separate their professional and social differences in a good light,

As a result, the rate of workers being absent from work rises and the risk of recurring illness increases.

Firms cannot be fully responsible for the health of their employees.

In most cases, companies or employers will deny that they contribute to the decline of good physical and mental health of an employee. It is hard to identify at times what exactly is wrong. Is the job right for an individual? Are their expectations reasonable and manageable? Is the employee good at their job but his/her health is getting worse due to stress and inactivity?

Human Resources can develop health and wellness programs by compiling feedback. 

What recreational activities would interest you at the workplace?

It is statistically proven that corporate wellness does reduce health and performance related issues at the workplace. Finding the right fit for your team requires planning. The right plan will achieve a higher rate of participation and will include a lot of interactive activities that are practical and educational.
