Welcome to the Spider-Verse.

Meet Miles : During a live appearance Saturday at Comic Con Experience CCXP17 in São Paulo, Brazil, filmmakers Christopher Miller and Phil Lord (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street) unveiled the official title and first teaser trailer for the upcoming animated Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The pair, who wrote the script for the Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation project, also confirmed that Dope actor Shameik Moore voices Miles Morales, the Brooklyn teen who takes up the web-slinging mantle to become another version of Spidey. Reports of Moore’s casting came about earlier this year, but the writing duo hadn’t commented on his involvement when the announcement dropped.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse brings Miles to the silver screen for the very first time, and this exciting new footage zeroes in on the fan-favorite comic character in action as he traverses through a universe in which more than one person can wear the Spider-Man mask. Toward the beginning of the trailer, we see Miles stooping down to what appears to be Peter Parker’s grave, a quick shot that seems to confirm the narrative of the comics: Miles assumes the Spider-Man identity following Peter’s death. The clip also shows off the film’s vivid color palette and stunning, unique animation, both of which indicate that the pic will be like nothing we’ve ever seen before.Meet Miles Morales in the first teaser trailer for Sony's animated Spider-Man film

But the real magic comes right at the end, when Miles sits down on a bench in a New York subway to speak to another Spider-Man–who looks uncannily similar to Peter Parker himself (though that might just be our own wishful thinking). “So how many of us are there?” Miles asks before the camera shifts focus to a spider crawling down the subway station’s wall.

Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, Miles Morales made his comic book debut in a 2011 installment of Ultimate Fallout. The imprint chronicles the happenings and superheroics of an alternate universe, which the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse trailer so keenly depicts. That comic run wrapped in 2015, but Miles has thankfully stuck around.

Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman direct the movie, with Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Christina Steinberg producing.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is slated for a December 14, 2018 release.
